2022-23
The year begins quietly for Carolina. Once again, they do not make any significant moves in free agency, nor do they make any blockbuster trades. As the season moves along, though, it's clear that something is different this year – Laine is playing like a man possessed (41G 48A), harkening back to the President's Trophy season. Reinhart isn't bogged down by injuries. But the biggest difference lies on the blue line. Olli Maatta has arrived, recording 18 goals and 34 assists. Equally impressive is the emergence of Ville Pokka, who has a career year at age 28 (12G 36A). Karlsson misses 8 games as various minor injuries crop up throughout the season, bust still finishes with 69 points (16G 53A).
The team powers their way to a 51-27-4 record, winning the Metropolitan. In a bit of a shocker, Colby Cave wins the Selke in his first full season with the club.
In the first round, they face the Flyers. Right away, the team's performance isr reminiscient of the dominance that they exhibited in the last two rounds just a couple of years prior. They take the first two games, including a dominating 6-0 victory. But the Flyers aren't just going to roll over and die, no matter how much Caniacs want them to. In the first game back in Philadelphia, the Flyers are powered by their home crowd to a 7-1 victory. Their confidence is short-lived as the Hurricanes fire back and take game 4 by a score of 5-3. With the series returning to Raleigh, Carolina shuts the Flyers out 3-0 and eliminates them in five.
Believe.
Their next opponent is the Rangers, fresh off a gruelling 7-game series against the Penguins. But, the extra rest appears to have done more harm than good as the Hurricanes proceed to drop the first three games, being outscored 9-3 in them. Facing elimination in enemy territory, goaltender Eric Comrie decides that they're not going out without a fight, and Laine scores twice to power the team to a 2-0 victory and stave off elimination.
In Raleigh, game five ends up being a double-overtime thriller after two third period goals by Reinhart tie the game. Laine would be the hero again, banging home the winning goal with four and a half minutes left in the second overtime.
Game six is entirely decided in the second period. Devin Shore gives the Rangers the lead midway through, but Carolina's Isac Lundestrom answers a few minutes later, and rookie Martin Kuba scores on the dying seconds of the game's only powerplay to steal the lead and ultimately force a seventh game.
Game seven is a low-shooting affair and even lower scoring: another rookie, Falko Kunz, wires a beautiful feed from Pirri and opens the scoring less than a minute into the game.
It would be the only goal scored that night.
The Hurricanes pulled off a reverse sweep after looking thoroughly outmatched in the first three games. Players and fans alike go ballistic in celebration; the team was on their way to the conference finals again. Believe.
Buffalo has been waiting almost 20 years for this rematch. With big names up front like Brad Marchand, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Alex DeBrincat, and Sebastian Aho, it would be anything but easy. Brayden Holtby in net made it that much harder.
The Sabres take game one by a score of 5-2, but Carolina rallies back and beats the breaks off them in game two – scoring 8 times on 23 shots against Holtby, then wiring one past his backup for good measure. The third period alone has seven goals in it; 5 scored by Carolina and 2 by Buffalo.
The series continues to go back and forth when it moves to KeyBank Arena. Carolina wins game three by a score of 2-1, then loses game four in overtime. When the series comes back to Raleigh, the ever-faithful are treated to another blowout as Reinhart and Karlsson both record hat tricks in an 8-2 rout. The Hurricanes score three unanswered goals in the second period of game six, and manage to hang on for a 3-2 victory as they knock the Sabres off in six games.
Believe.
Conversely, the Canucks have only had to wait two years. This time, they hadn't just won the Pacific, they were President's Trophy winners after a 59-20-3 regular season. The teams were tied at one after two periods, and a three-goal explosion sees the Hurricanes win 4-3. The Canucks take advantage of some undisciplined play and score a pair of powerplay goals en route to their own 4-3 win, evening the series. JvR won game three in overtime, but Martin Kuba would tally another game-winning goal to tie the series at two going back to Vancouver.
Carolina handily wins game five by a tally of 4-1. Leading the series 3-2, Caniacs salivate in anticipation of another cup lift on home ice but alas, it was not meant to be as the Canucks blank the Hurricanes 4-0. In game seven, the Canucks come out firing on all cylinders and dominate the play in all areas of the ice, but Maatta and Reinhart both manage to score against the flow of the play, giving the Canes a 2-0 lead going into the third despite being outshot 35-16. With their backs against the wall, Vancouver comes out and racks up 21 shots, and fans everywhere collectively hold their breath when Alex Kerfoot gets them on the board midway through the third.
But Comrie holds the fort, and Carolina wins 2-1, capturing their second cup in three years. Sam Reinhart wins the Conn Smythe, tallying 14 goals and 15 assists in 25 games.
Laine records 27 points, 12G 15A. Lundestrom makes a statement with 19 points (4G 15A) in 23 games. Maatta carries his strong regular season into the playoffs with 3G 10A.
Karlsson's performance in these playoffs is concerning. He plays 20 games, but only puts up 4G 5A. There are whispers that the 33-year-old might be considering retirement, which comes as a surprise after his otherwise-fantastic year. Adding to these rumors, Karlsson passes his captaincy on to Maatta over the summer.
Notable moves:
  • Jordan Staal retires at age 34. He finishes his career with 1303 games played, 1291 of which were with Pittsburgh, and 748 points (314G, 434A)
  • Tuukka Rask retires at age 36. He finishes his career with 651 games played, all for Boston, a 2.60 GAA, .915 sv%, and 58 shutouts.
2023-24
This season immediately gets off on the wrong foot. Laine breaks a bone in his elbow in a preseason game and misses over three months. Maatta suffers a hip strain a couple of days later and misses the first month and a half. Then, in November, Pokka fractured his knee and missed five months. In spite of these injuries, the team still finishes with a respectable 41-33-8 record, but 90 points aren't enough to make the playoffs in the east. Laine manages to play 38 games (17G 18A). Maatta puts up 4G 24A in 55 games. Reinhart still puts up a respectable 70 points while playing two-thirds of the season without his fellow star, but only barely ekes out 20 goals.
Rumors of Karlsson's demise have been greatly exaggerated as the 34-year-old veteran puts up 48 points (13G 35A) in 76 games, but there's no denying that his career is winding down.
Notable moves:
  • Jamie Benn retires at age 34. He finishes his career with 1167 games played, all for Dallas, and 939 points (360G, 579A)
  • Logan Couture retires at age 35. He finishes his career with 1154 games played, all for San Jose, and 946 points (383G, 563A)
  • Drew Doughty retires at age 34. He finishes his career with 1194 games played, all for Los Angeles, and 681 points (145G, 536A)
2024-25
Fans expecting the traditional bounceback year from the Hurricanes would be disappointed, as the team regresses from the previous season with a 36-39-7 record, finishing 6th in the Metro. Laine (28G 28A) has another season marred by injury, but only misses 13 games instead of the 40+ the year prior. Reinhart's production takes another minor step back, finishing the season with 24G and 43A. Maatta plays the full schedule but can't get back to the heights of a few years ago, only tallying 8 goals and 25 assists.
The year's biggest surprise for Carolina is Karlsson. He produces 63 points for the club (16G 47A).
Notable moves:
  • Andrei Svechnikov wins the Conn Smythe as St. Louis sweeps Ottawa in the Cup finals.
  • Nicklas Backstrom retires at age 37. He finishes his career with 1400 games played, all for Washington, and 1347 points (342G 1005A).
  • Matt Duchene retires at age 34. He finishes his career with 1101 games played, all for Washington, and 856 points (293G 563A)
  • Claude Giroux retires at age 37. He finishes his career with 1309 games played, all for Philadelphia, and 1400 points (420G, 980A)
  • Jake Gardiner retires at age 34. He finishes his career with 1180 games played, all for Anaheim, and 610 points (166G, 444A)
  • Patrick Kane retires at age 36. He finishes his career with 1271 games played, all for Chicago, and 1316 points (574G, 742A)
2025-26
With Karlsson now entering the final year of his contract, and unlikely to renew, the team is determined to send him off with a bang.
It's a shame they didn't specify what kind of bang. 29-48-5 is good for dead last in the league.
Reinhart suffert a torn elbow ligament at the start of December and missed the rest of the season. He managed 9G 7A in the 29 games he did play. Laine struggled this season (26G 27A), in part because of Reinhart's season being cut short, in part due to playing with a new center and needing to develop chemistry from scratch. Maatta continues to lack the offensive spark that his predecessor had, producing 6G 28A over the full schedule.
Perhaps most disappointing of all is Karlsson. His season is riddled with injuries, only playing a total of 55 games and recording 30 points (5G 25A). Determined to not let this disasterous season be his last, he signs a one-year extension.
Patrik Laine signs a six year, 7.35mil extension.
The Hurricanes fall to 4th in the draft.
Barry Trotz announces his retirement from coaching. In nine years with the Hurricanes, he records a 384-296-58 record and two Stanley Cups. His all-time record is 711-599-99.
Notable moves:
  • Victor Hedman retires at age 35. He finishes his career with 1053 games played, all with Toronto, and 621 points (154G, 467A)
  • Evgeni Malkin retires at age 39. He finishes his career with 1504 games played, all with Pittsburgh, and 1616 points (602G, 1014A)
  • Alex Ovechkin retires at age 40. He finishes his career with 1593 games played, all but 52 with Washington, and 1727 points (874G, 853A). He is second on the all-time goal scorers list.
  • Dougie Hamilton retires at age 33. He finishes his career with 1092 games played, all with Winnipeg, and 552 points (175G, 377A)
  • Barry Trotz retires from coaching.
2026-27
The Hurricanes make an uncharacteristic move in the FA market: signing 28-year-old Alex Nylander. It's a bit of a new look for the team as Nikolas Polonich takes over behind the bench, though the core remains mostly unchanged. They get off to a strong start, in a tight race for the top of the Metro through Christmas, but falter in the back half of the season and end up being the odd man out in a three-way tie for the last two wildcard spots, as they have a negative goal differential. Their record is a respectable 44-35-3.
Reinhart appears to be done, unable to recover from his ligament injury a year prior. In 69 games, he only manages 11G 22A. Maatta (12G 17A) appears similarly out of it, although his goal scoring does increase, his assists take a huge step back. Laine leads the team in scoring again with 31 goals and 38 assists, and the newly-arrived Nylander puts up 50 points (19G 31A) in his first year with the team.
Erik Karlsson recaptures a level of play that seemed to be gone, hitting 50 assists and scoring 15 goals at 36. He defies expectations by signing on for another year.
A compliance buyout is awarded to each team as a result of CBA negotiations. In a move that surprises the hockey world, but not attentive Caniacs, the Hurricanes use theirs to cut Sam Reinhart loose. Reinhart finishes his 12-year stint in Carolina with 971 games played and 902 points (401G, 501A).
Notable moves:
  • Steven Stamkos retires at age 37. He finishes his career with 1470 games played, split between Tampa and Winnipeg, and 1500 points (689G, 811A)
  • Petr Mrazek retires at age 35. He finishes his career with 527 games played, all in San Jose, with a 2.68 GAA, a .921 sv%, and 31 shutouts.
2027-28
The year is headlined Patrik Laine (32G 30A), though the team as a whole continues to struggle in the scoring department. A young defenseman by the name of Aurthur Mills has a breakout season, tallying 42 points (13G 29A) to come in second on the team. Maatta's 9G 27A are good for fourth. Injuries rear their head once again for the 37-year-old Karlsson, however he still manages to produce 30 points (4G 26A) in 59 games. 23-year-old netminder Dale Shepherd plays out of his mind, recording a 2.12 GAA and a .927 sv% on his way to winning the Vezina trophy. The season comes right down to the wire, and the 43-29-10 Hurricanes manage to beat out Buffalo for the final wildcard spot by 1 point.
Their opponent in the first round is Tampa Bay, winning the east with a formidable 57-22-3 record. The Hurricanes push the Lightning to seven games and ultimately prevail. The hype begins anew; fans who remember the 2020-21 run regale their younger counterparts with stories of the underdogs that stunned the league, and how it was happening again. Barely managing to take the last wildcard spot and knocking off a top-seeded Florida team.
Unfortunately, those hopes are dashed as the Senators sweep them in the second round, en route to appearing the Cup finals.
Karlsson records 9 points (2G 7A) in 10 playoff games, and delights the fanbase by signing a two year extension. Can the team win one more cup in that time?
Notable moves:
  • Sam Reinhart retires at age 32. He does not play after being bought out the previous summer.
  • John Carlson retires at age 37. He finishes his career with 1404 games played and 871 points (255G, 616A)
  • Sean Monahan retires at age 33. He finishes his career with 1056 games played, all with Toronto, and 1185 points (515G, 670A)
  • Sidney Crosby retires at age 40. He finishes his career with 1579 games played, all with Pittsburgh, and 1973 points (764G, 1209A). He finishes second on the all-time points leaders list.
2028-29
This year is a disaster for the team, though not as bad as 2025-26. Nobody on the team manages to reach 20 goals. The leading scorer is Donald Upham, who finishes with 44 points (17G 27A). Laine's production falls off a cliff, 19 goals and 20 assists over the full schedule makes this his worst professional season to date. Maatta plays 56 games and records 27 points (10G 17A) as his career begins to wind down.
Karlsson's scoring touch is still present, but he only plays 40 games, finishing the year with 2G 20A.
Notable moves: None
2029-30
Going into the last year of Karlsson's contract, with the man approaching 40 years of age, everyone knows that this season will be the end of an era no matter what happens. The man himself only plays in 61 games (4G 22A), but the team rallies around him and finishes the year 43-34-9, good enough for second in an unsually weak Metro division. Laine brings his numbers back up, recording 28 goals and 32 assists. Arthur Mills continues to improve (10G 45A) and provides the blue line with a second scoring touch that it's been lacking for several years. 24-year-old Steve Lambert emerges as a 1C, leading the team with 68 points (32G 36A).
Unfortunately, Karlsson's last gasp at winning a Cup ends with a first round exit in five games at the hands of the Islanders.
Erik Karlsson retires at the age of 40. In 20 seasons with the Hurricanes, he plays 1545 games and records 1149 points (273G, 876A). In 80 playoff games with the team, he scores 11G 39A for 50 points. Number 65 is retired immediately.
Final stats:
  • 2 Stanley Cups
  • 1 Conn Smythe
  • 1 Hart
  • 1 Lady Byng
  • 1 Norris
  • 1 Ted Lindsay
  • 1 Mark Messier Leadership Award
  • 1 First Team All-Star selection (2020)
  • NHL All-Rookie Team (2010)
  • 10 All-Star Game appearances
Hope you guys had as much fun reading all of this as I did running through it. Since we'll (hopefully) be seeing real hockey again in a couple of weeks, this will be the last post of this sort I'll make for the time being. Maybe next time we'll see what Freddie Andersen or Sergei Fedorov would have done if they'd ever suited up for us, once the playoffs are over of course.
In a top level comment, I'll post the stats for every player currently on the real team's roster for the sake of posterity.

/hockey stands with BLM and the fight against racism

Though it shouldn't be a surprise with the multitude of threads from players and organizations alike filling /hockey and compiled just down below, we did want to make it explicit that /hockey has and will continue to fight against racism in all its forms.
We think the murder of George Floyd by the hands of police is abhorrent. We will continue to lift the voices of the hockey community that speak up against racism by ensuring their posts make it to /hockey for those to read.
And we will continue to enforce and remove any comments or racist remarks as well as all bigotry, sexism and xenophobia.
For a list of ways to donate, get involved or see how you can be a part of #BLM please follow this fantastic link: https://www.timeout.com/things-to-do/how-to-support-black-lives-matter
